An art life of over 4 decades has taken my work through many phases. Painter, Mixed –Media, Sculpture, Installation, Digital Prints and Lithographs – all have been exhibited and garnered grants . The flood of Irene and the hurricane Sandy set me back 2 years; my studio has been rebuilt. I am rediscovering oils and excited to explore new themes. “Tsunami:Loss” and “Mountains, Barriers and Poppy Fields” all encaustic, were my last solo shows. Now, after disasters of my own, I am teasing and testing : color, memory, and the unconscious, mixing abstraction and realism. I am revisiting whimsy as I did in the sculptures of “Family Portraits”. My journey goes on as new ideas are explored.

Naturally both sensitive and curious, I experience a lot of feelings due to my private life as well as my confrontation with the globalised world. My work is the synthesis of this sincere and emotional point of view in minimalist metaphorical images.
A pewter wire, draws in a single stroke my subjects. Flat-washes of colors contrast with the metallic wire and sum their evocative power to the intellectual complicity created by the single stroke.
With a childlike and often humoristic form, my minimalist narrative paintings offer insightful observations about our contemporary world.
Blending a witty metallic wire with the sensitivity of color, my art invents a new medium, bringing fresh air to the art audience.

My art is inspired by the concept of garden as a metaphor for human mortality. While I enjoy the small plot of earth in my backyard garden, gardening in my studio is a lifesaver for my imagination. I create my gardens by either trapping objects, along with scraps and detritus, in sticky resin of self-leveling gel or I bend steel into an armature, a grid, a plot, in which a fabric garden is created from bits of collected fabrics, laces, plastics, and deconstructed silk flowers. This eclectic array of urban detritus is machine embroidered to create vibrantly colored flowers that are at once beautiful and threatening—a dichotomy that enables me to extend the brief beauty of my backyard garden while grappling with my own transient existence.

I am investigating the dynamism of nature’s life cycles — both observed and imagined. The struggle between the survival of the environment and human tampering plagues me. In watercolor on paper, i show the complexity and density of nature and especially its fragility. I use the Tornado motif as a metaphor for uncontrolled forces. The intense detail of my renderings juxtaposes realism with more abstract elements. In this divergence, chance and controlled painting correlate with how one might see order confronting chaos within the ever-present cycle of mortality and regeneration.

While my subjects are always reality based, they are manifested in reducing the forms of complicated compositions and structures to simple shapes – obliterating detail in favor of minimalist clarity – and layering sheer tone over tone to create richness and depth of color – whether vivid of transparent hues. My ultimate criteria is that I have processed the emotional responses to my subjects internally and only that becomes my authentic source material and reason to make art. I also think of my work as a diary of locations visited which conveys both a nostalgic memory of the simplicity and restorative effects of nature and a documentary notation of the loss of its innocence through technology and industry.

Additionally, she received a George Sugarman Award, a Ludwig Vogelstein grant and a NYFA Workshop Grant. Greenwood has a graduate degree in Fine Arts from Hunter College, New York.
